Solutions to Lake Lanier's Problems

Save the People and the Mussels from the Great Destroyers of FreedomDon Dickinson of Fayette County
21 Nov 2007The reason there is not enough water for the people and the mussels is that there has not been sufficient rain in the past few years and especially in recent months. Climate variability is normal and can be expected to continue in the future. Cycles of flood and drought happen, and are just as much a part of nature as mussels.
As the human population dependent on water from our lakes has grown, politicians responsible for providing adequate infrastructure have done nothing constructive. Doing something constructive would be taking action to secure more water, not begging Alabamians, begging the Corps of Engineers, or praying to God. Alabama has a worse drought than Georgia and begging from neighbors is a sorry policy. Begging from the Corps is still bad policy and does not in any way address the long term problem of not enough water for a growing human population. Praying is fine for individuals who choose to, but politicians who use prayer as a method are out of their lane and trying to substitute emotional appeal for reasoned effort toward doing their job.
The constructive options are two: get more natural fresh water or desalinate salt water. Some people think conserving water is an important option, but it is not. It helps slow the disaster of a dry lake, but it does not solve the fundamental problem of too little water. We need more water whether we use it conscientiously or not.
Getting more natural fresh water means employing some combination of more dams, more wells, or importing fresh water by pipeline. All of those options are limited because of future droughts and continued growth of the human population.
Desalinating salt water is the winning idea. Georgia has access to an infinite supply of salt water in the Atlantic Ocean. Using well established and proven desalinization and pipeline technology we can easily provide sufficient water for all Georgians, and all mussels, come any future drought or population growth.
It takes a lot of energy to desalinate salt water. If we use fossil fuels the desalinization process and water pumping will be very expensive and will add huge amounts of pollutants and carbon dioxide to the atmosphere.
The low cost, pollution free alternative to coal or natural gas powered desalinization and pumping is nuclear power. Unfortunately, there are many objections to nuclear power. The good news is that all the objections are without merit as they are caused by ignorance, political motives, or both.
The biggest objection to nuclear power is the allegation that it is unsafe. This is an idea not supported by any evidence. The fact is that in the United States, more people have been killed in Teddy Kennedy’s car than in nuclear power plants. So, not only are our nuclear power plants safe, they are vastly safer than any other major industry.
What about the Chernobyl nuclear plant disaster in the Soviet Union you say? The simple fact is that there never has been a communist government that has done anything but produce massive misery, hunger, death, and environmental destruction. It is completely irrational to use just another in an infinite list of communist failures as a reason for the greatest country in history not to get on with progress and the provision of plenty of water to her people and mussels.
Even the French have been safely satisfying most of their power needs for decades with nuclear power. Does anyone rationally believe that America cannot do something that a country that cannot defend itself, be a good ally to those who have defended it, or have a stable government for more than a few years, can do?
Another objection to nuclear power is what to do with nuclear waste when the fuel is spent. Currently, nuclear power plants have been holding it on site without incident. A long term solution is not really difficult to design but the opponents of nuclear power have raised every silly objection imaginable.
The simple fact is that man has always lived with radioactive elements in the environment. The thing we need to do to be safe is keep away from the radioactive elements. There are many safe, economical, rational proposals for long term storage of nuclear waste. The problem is not science or engineering but fear mongering, irrational objections from political hacks, or those ignorant of the science. My personal favorite solution is to store the stuff on a dry lake bed in the desert at Fort Irwin, California. That gets it away from people, protected by our military, contained physically and naturally from the environment, easily monitored, and readily available for future use as new technologies inevitably emerge. There are half a dozen other good solutions.
At this point, the intelligent, non-leftist ideologues, are wondering why we do not already have nuclear powered desalinization providing plentiful water to all Georgians and Florida mussels? Because, too many of us have been drinking the leftist Kool-Aid.
The greatest impediment to leftist ideas worldwide is the historically unprecedented success of Western civilization and America. Freedom, private property, the rule of law, capitalism, market economics, and individualism, have produced the best living conditions in history. The leftists have found it very hard to sell their collectivist ideas that historically produce only misery to a people who are better off than any who have ever lived. The leftist solution to the general failure of socialism worldwide has been a comprehensive and persistent campaign to bring down Western civilization and America.
Just name some leftist ideas that will actually improve the lives and well-being of all Americans. There are none because their goals can only be reached if they can make America weak and her people miserable and demoralized. Only then will a desperate people come to accept their minimalist ideas, while giving up their hard won freedoms.
Leftist politicians scorn real solutions to our water problems. Far too many Republican politicians are Republicans In Name Only, RINOs, who want to beg and pray while we suffer perpetual water restrictions as they flaccidly blab and dither.
The choices are clear. We can wring our hands and in growing thirst, search forever for a fantasy perfect, and hence non-existent, solution to our water problems. We can continue to compete with each other and a lowly mussel for the last drops of water to then only in desperation relinquish our government, property, freedom and lives to the very leftist scoundrels who caused all our problems. Or, like the great Americans who got us to this golden age of human health and comfort, we can get busy building the nuclear powered desalinization and pumping facilities that will provide abundant water for our growing population of happy, healthy people and mussels.
Put another way, our choice is to in our desiccated desperation join the peoples paradises such as Russia, North Korea, and Cuba—environmental hell holes all—or press on being free Americans who boldly solve problems while preserving a clean environment and living the good life in partnership with happy mussels.
Building the nuclear powered desalinization plants will have many side benefits and contribute greatly to a prosperous economy far into the future. But for those of you still not convinced, just remember; desalinated water is not filtered through someone else’s kidneys before you drink it, as is that fine water from the Chattahoochee.
One more thing. You leftists can save all the comments about what a terrible fascist and Nazi I am for loving America and living large. You have been telling me that for 50 years. Why not break with your cherished Alinsky’s Rules for Radicals and actually send in a well reasoned alternative idea, backed up by some critical thinking instead of the usual vapid, vituperrious rhetoric.
About the writer:
I am a chemist and geologist by college training. In the Army I learned a good bit about nuclear power. I have a Masters in Business Administration that I picked up along the way and now teach the history of Western civilization, leadership, critical thinking, learning organizations, and values.
I have been a Republican all my life. Since 911, I have devoted every spare minute of my time to reading about and understanding the twin menaces of leftism and Islamofascism that are trying to destroy Western civilization and America.
Endangered Species Act is the Problem
by Kathy Totten of Cumming, GA - 11/21/07
Following is my understanding of the reasons for the new low for Lake
Lanier.
It is because of the Endangered Species Act that Lake Lanier has
reached a new low. In 2006 because of the ESA it became the rule to keep
releasing water no matter what to save some Endangered Species. Now, it is
my understanding that the Endangered Species responsible for our record low
lake levels are only "endangered" in Florida. They exist in other parts of
our country. So, is this a proper use of the original intent of the
Endangered Species Act? My serious suggestion to solve the problem is to
have the Marine Biologists list some of our marine life as Endangered
Species. Our mussels are dying off. Walk the shores and look at all the
shells. We probably have other marine life that is being destroyed by the
low lake levels. Once we get our Endangered Species listed, the battle can
be over whose species is more important.
